Drug withdrawal times
For referral cases, if at all possible, please advise your clients to discontinue the following drugs prior to the appointment:
- In cases that might require intradermal allergy testing: glucocorticoids (oral prednisolone minimum of 4 weeks, injectable long-acting formulations at least 4 weeks + duration of action) antihistamines (2 weeks) essential fatty acids (2 weeks) cyclosporine A (1 week)
- In cases that might require biopsies (e.g. suspected autoimmune diseases): glucocorticoids (oral prednisolone minimum 1 week, injectable long-acting formulations 1 week + durations of action)
- Any topical medication for about 3-4 days
Please note that these are only guidelines. Individual patients need different glucocorticoid withdrawal times prior to the return of full reactivity for intradermal allergy testing. The duration of administration could also have some influence.
If drug withdrawal is not possible prior to the first appointment (e. g. due to intolerable pruritus), I will be happy to discuss alternative ways of keeping the patient as comfortable as possible during the withdrawal period with the client during the first consultation.
